Cathy S. Sleeper is a professional trainer based at Turkey Creek Stables in San Antonio,
Texas. Turkey Creek was purchased by Barbara Black in 1974, and Cathy became partner/trainer
in 1982. She brings over 30 years of experience to her horses and students.
Cathy has the opportunity to ride and learn from many excellent trainers and coaches over
the years including Hans Biss (former trainer at the German Riding School in Warendorf,
Germany), the late Franz Rochowansky (former chief rider at the Spanish Riding School
of Vienna), the late Jurgen Mainzer (German bronze and silver medallist and
International Dressage Judge), David and Karen O’Conner
(US Olympic medallists in eventing), and Mary Wanless (Author of For the Good of the Horse
and For the Good of the Rider). Cathy was also invited to ride 2002 and 2003 USDF
Trainer’s Symposium with Hannes Mueller.
Cathy’s training philosophy is a conglomerate of many of the phenomenal instructors she
has worked with. She believes that Dressage is the base for all disciplines, especially
for jumping. Horses should primarily be going forward and straight, with higher level
movements only being integrated after both of the basic principles are achieved.
In addition to competition dressage, Cathy also specializes in training jumping and event
horses for children of all ages and abilities.
